Knit or Crochet
There are many sites for free patterns. My favorite is: http://www.lionbrand.com/
You have to sign in, but then you can download the free patterns. Be sure you look in the free directory, they do have other patterns that cost to download. There is also a comprehensive set of written step-by-step instructions for learning to knit and for learning to crochet.
PBS runs craft shows you can watch and record (copyright law allows one personal copy) so you don’t have to spend $40 to purchase the DVDs. The shows are also available online to watch for free, but the site does not offer all seasons – so record what you want to keep.
My local PBS station runs Knitting Daily every weekday. It is a 25 minute show that gives you a visual on knitting and crochet stitches and techniques. They also provide free patterns from each show on their website and have a long resource list of yarn suppliers and pattern sources.
PBS Knitting Daily.
The first 10 seasons were hosted by Eunny Jang, later seasons by Vicki Howell.
PBS also runs: Knit and Crochet Now! It too offers online tutorials and patterns. They have a segment on quick projects – Block of the Week and Scarf of the Week are two.
PBS Knit and Crochet Now PBS site with information and a link to the website.

There are other online sites that will teach you how to knit or crochet. Some have video instructions.
