Apple Betty

This is a great way to use up old apples and stale bread.

APPLE BETTY aka Apple Brown Betty

canned milk (evaporated milk)

Slice apples and layer in the bottom of a baking dish.  Mix sugar, cinnamon, & nutmeg.  Season apples with sugar mix.  Layer dry bread crumbs* on top, dot with butter, and sprinkle with canned milk. 

Repeat layering, ending with apple layer.  Bake in moderate oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, or until done.
*This traditional recipe says “bread crumbs”, but my father’s recipe used small torn bits of dried bread.

Traditionally this dish was served with an optional hard sauce.  As an alternative, try it with a caramel sauce.


1 T boiling water
1/2 C butter
1 t vanilla
1/8 t nutmeg or mace
1 C sugar

Pour boiling water over butter, stir until creamy.  Add flavoring, then stir in sugar.
