Designer Scent Products
Tips to save money by making your own designer cosmetics or beauty products. You will need perfume or scented oil. You can use up “old” perfumes, or pick up a new scented oil at the drugstore/health food store.
Start by saving your empty containers: lip gloss pots, travel size lotion containers, jam jars, spice jars, etc. Thoroughly clean them in hot soapy water until there is no residue left. This may take multiple cleanings, but be diligent. You want to avoid any bacteria left from the first use.* Sanitize in a solution of 9 parts water and 1 part bleach. Air dry on a clean, sanitized surface.
* It is best if you re-use your own containers and not someone else’s to avoid transferring bacteria. For larger items like bath salts and facial scrubs, you can use glass baby food jars or glass food jars which have been sanitized in the dishwasher.
All containers should be sanitized – plastic containers by using a bleach solution, and glass containers may be sanitized in your dishwasher.
If you want to use new containers, you can find them at your local discount store.
Buy a large bottle of unscented lotion at the drugstore or a discount store. Fill a travel size container three quarters of the way with the lotion. Add 3-4 drops of perfume, shake well. Fill remaining space with lotion. Use.
Fill a plastic ziptop bag halfway with Epsom salts™. Add 3-4 drops of perfume. You may also add 3-4 drops of food coloring if you wish. Close the top and mix thoroughly. Store in an airtight container.
